STREHAIA
The Town of Medieval Effigies
Strehaia is a town which, in order to express its modernity, has to look into its old history, especially the medieval one.
In Stehaia, the important effigies of the medieval establishment have been preserved quite well: the walls of the royal castle dating from Mihai Viteazu (Michael the Brave)'s time as well as the beautiful Monastery built by Neagoe Basarab in 1645.
Strehaia was declared town in 1921. The town became very famous along the years through its weekly cattle market, one of the oldest in Oltenia, dating back in 1671.
Today, out of 13 000 people, a great part of them are Rroms. After 1990, they built a district with "pagoda" styled houses, with swimming pools, gyms, spring fountains, etc.
Two picturesque places, Gura Motrului Monastery and Lunca Banului woods are in the vicinity of Strehaia.
