Iron Gates Museum-Drobeta Turnu Severin

The Iron Gates Museum

Independentei 2, Drobeta-Turnu Severin, Mehedinti
Tel: 0252/312177

The The Iron Gates Museum is a great way to step back in time and discover more about Mehedinti through exhibits spanning prehistory, early history and its modern history. The museum, founded in 1912 by Al. Barcacila and housed initially in a wing of the actual building had the purpose to complete the archeological site dating from Roman times, including the Roman Camp of Drobeta and the ruins of Trajan's bridge .
In time, with new acquisitions, the museum was extended in the whole building. The new configuration with three exhibition sections was inaugurated in 1972 when the museum became what it is today.

History Section: 50 000 exhibits dating from the later Paleolithic until 1945. The most sensational exhibit is the Homo sapiens dated 8000 BC, discovered at Schela Cladovei . A vast room displays vestiges of ancient and medieval Drobeta: collections of arms, coins, jewelry, pottery.
Natural Sciences: exhibitions featuring the flora and fauna of Mehedinti and a fascinating aquarium with 15 species of fish from the Danube.
Ethnography and Folklore: exhibitions presenting aspects of the rural civilizations of Mehedinti, beautiful national costumes samples of interior decoration of the rural houses, pottery from Sisesti as well as a traditional room from Ada Kaleh, the island on the Danube which was submerged when the Iron Gates Dam was built.
