Natural Reservations in Mehedinti
The Gorge and the Topolnita Cave Reservation
The gorge and the Topolnita cave are located 31 km North from Drobeta Turnu Severin, near Ciresu village, not far from the beautiful Topolnita Hermitage.
A total length of 10 330 m ranks the Topolnita cave the second in Romania
and among the first twenty in the world. The cave galleries, structured on five levels, have numerous karst lakes and bizarre shapes which
give them the names: The Great Candle, The Candles Forest, The Great Dome of Stalactites, The Crystal Lake, etc. Among these galleries, the one
named "Emil Racovita", 1570 m long, is the most spectacular speological formation of the Carpathian Mountains.
A rare species of spotted tulip (Fritillaria montana) grows at the cave's exit.
The gorge of Topolnita spreads on 20 km along the Mehedinti Plateau. The area of Topolnita Gorge is a breathtaking landscape with up and down hills bounded
by forests of Southern species (beech trees, oaks, flowering ash).
The Karst Complex from Ponoare
Located at 5 km South-East from Baia de Arama, the Karst Complex from Ponoarele has a diverse landscape:
blind valleys, caves, the Zaton lake, the rock called "Cleopatra's needle", the natural bridge called "God's bridge", the result of the collapse
of the ceiling of a former cave. During rainy seasons, the main Zaton Lake stretches across several square kilometers, only to mysteriously disappear
inside the surrounding caves among which Bulba Cave, with its 5000 m galleries, unique due to its architectural harmony, as if they were man-made.
The charm of the place is enhanced by the lilac forest spread on 20 hectares, where a festival called "The Celebration of Lilac" takes place every year during the lilac blossom time.
The Epuran Cave
